Eileen Goldenberg

Himmelberger Gallery is proud to present San Francisco artist Eileen Goldenberg’s encaustic paintings. Goldenberg paints intuitively, building layers of color, conjuring in a palette of rich vermilion, magenta, yellow and shades of white.

Look closely and you can see the thin lines of color surrounding the thousands of tiny dots of color. This is a result of many layers of wax painted over the matrix, then scraped back. Her paintings achieve complexity within the constraints of form and color.

Eileen Goldenberg’s medium is tempered beeswax with pigments for color. By painting many layers of wax and then carving them back she excavates into the work to achieve her final appearance. The surface is waxy and lush, similar to human skin. Tree resin is added to the tempered beeswax to create a durable surface.

The current series of “Tea House” paintings was inspired by the book The Tea House Fire by Ellis Avery. Goldenberg’s paintings capture the serenity of the tea ceremony.
